The day before winter break one art class was a little ahead and was ready to start the next project. Instead of starting right before a month long break (our school takes a whole month off in the winter!) I gave the student a "Free Art Day."
I put out a bunch of different supplies, told them what isn't appropriate art in school (weapons, fighting, etc.) and then said, "OK, make something awesome!"
And you know what? They did.
This is not something I would do all the time, but it was really great to see what unrestricted eight year old minds can create.
