I have tired on this blog to focus on my art teaching practices. But things are changing.

I moved to Europe...that was a big change.

I am now teaching high school art.

And, most importantly to this blog, I am really trying to focus more on my own art making.

I have always been an artist...a maker if you will. I can not help myself. Even at times of my life when I felt I was being very artistically unproductive, if I really think about it I suddenly realize, "oh yeah! I actually made this sculpture, and these three paintings then!" I might have just pushed them out of my mind because the did not feel "good enough" or something.

So, I want to shift this blog; it has been too quiet for too long anyway! Instead of only focusing on art education (specifically TAB) I also want to talk about my art, and how I try to be an artist and an educator.

I do not claim to be an expert in this. It is actually something I struggle with every day. But, maybe, we can figure some stuff out together.

This summer, before my move to Kiev, I gave away all of my artwork. I'm nuts, I know. It was a very cleansing experience, like watching your children go off into the world on their own for the first time. I once heard someone say, "Do not be the greatest collector of your own work." And I was. I had piles of painting and drawings that were good, but not being seen. Now dear friends can enjoy them; they can have an audience. It was wonderful.

All the paintings in this post is my own work from this summer. All the paintings in this post now live in another person's home (mostly other art teachers!). It makes me very, very happy to think about that.

Here are a few more of my children now out in the wild:
Here in Aurora, Colorado we are already in our second week of school! Things have been going very well so far and it is looking to be a really great year. I have some cool stuff in the works, that I will share with you all soon!
Our school is finally a full-grown PK-8 grade, and is now the largest school in the city. Remember last year how amazed I was that I taught 750 students? Well this year that number has gone up... it is now...

Wait for it...

1200!

Can you believe it? Twelve hundred students making amazing art; twelve hundred names to learn; twelve hundred smiles to earn. I am pumped!

Our administration has been great with the jump in numbers and made sure the electives have enough staffing this year. We are now offering 10 electives: Boy's and Girl's PE, Band, Choir, Drama, Spanish, Technology, Entrepreneurship, Yoga, and little old me at Art. It is so cool we get to offer all these classes this year.

The other day I had a art education collage student observe my class (hi if your reading this!). She asked some really great questions, but one really tripped me up: What is you biggest challenge?

I made some crack about a naughty student we had just had, but, of course, that is not true. Students, even the most challenging ones, are still a joy to have. Even though it sounds cliche, I really do love all of my students, especially the difficult ones.

So what is my biggest challenge? I honestly have no idea. Don't get me wrong, I have plenty of challenges in my life. But, I cannot pinpoint one as the biggest.

Burnout maybe? Keeping up with my personal art? I am just not sure...

What do you think? What is the biggest challenge to being an Art Teacher?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17032396672751951292noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5930763792721891473.post-78218405428477001172013-01-22T14:37:00.002-08:002013-01-22T14:37:37.502-08:00TAB Colorado Conference Part Two!

It was two VERY full days exploring and expanding TAB teaching. There seemed to be a heavy focus of assessment, which I was very happy about. I have been investigating assessment in my own practice and really reevaluating how and what I assess in my art classroom. I promise I will write a new post on that topic soon.

One funny part was during the Assessment panel. There was a panel of art education professors and representatives from the Colorado Department of Education discussing student and teacher assessment (got to love SB 10-191). There were a lot of great comments about developing student portfolios and measuring student process vs. product. Anne Thulson (Art Ed prof at Metropolitan State University of Denver, my alma mater) even mentioned some of the assessment techniques I am using in my class and gave me props in front of the whole conference. That's right, I'm a big deal. A little later I interrupted the whole discussion! I raised my hand and asked how we transfer all the wonderful qualitative data we collect on our students and produce a quantitative score to input to our districts for report cards. The discussion mediator seemed quite flustered with my interruption. he he. There were some good responses, but I loved Anne's the most. She said, "Adam, you can put a number on anything. Just put a grade in and stop worrying about it. Spend your energy on more important things." Yes!

I lead a breakout group for middle school teachers and got to have some great conversations with people at all different levels in their TAB teaching. I also presented at the conference about Digital Portfolios and seemed to have very good response from everyone.
It was a fun, but tiring, weekend.

Now on to less fun things. Both my wife and 2 year old daughter have the flu.
This is an airplane. I think it is really sweet. I am writing this because 24 Hour fitness is closed today...not really 24 hours, are we?
FYI: The Zoo, Chinese, and Greek restaurants are open today. Movie theaters are open, but really busy. Skiing is good today, if you ski. Nothing is on TV. Although if you are a bored Jew on Christmas (like me) you would already know these things.
Have a happy day everyone.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17032396672751951292noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5930763792721891473.post-67217034678496841952012-12-20T05:57:00.000-08:002012-12-20T05:57:11.731-08:00Sub Plans

I HATE missing school. I usually take one or no sick days a year, and miss maybe one more for professional development.
This year, however, I am on my district's Art Advocacy Committee. I have
to miss four days of work to rewrite our districts art curriculum. It is awesome work that I feel very lucky to be part of, but does require me to be out of my classroom.
Planning for a substitute teacher in a Choice Based art studio is a different beast. You have to explain the curriculum, the class and sub's expectations, and set everyone up for success. Here is the plan I have for my substitute, adopted from other TAB teachers.
I thought it would be fun to post an art education haiku every week. For those of you who dont know, a Haiku is a short form of Japanese poetry. In the English, usually the poem follows a five, seven, five syllable format. Am I good at Haikus? No...but I think they are fun!
In the past (before I came to the school) students would get one special for a full week. I think that sounds sweet. I would love to have a full week with my students to really focus in instruction and drive longer term projects. The downside would be the long stents of not seeing my students between weeks, but I think I would be ok with that.

Two years ago the school had a complete change-over in specialists. The PE, Music and Art (me) teachers were all new. Both the Music and PE teacher wanted to see the students more frequently, so I was outvoted and daily rotations ensued. The music teacher was worried about knowledge retention over the long breaks, and the PE teacher liked having only one setup per week. I can see where they are coming from, but I would rather have it the other way.

I love my team. We are all very good friends, and I even consider the music teacher a good "outside of school friend." I really do not want to rustle feathers. The problem is, I have had quite a few parents, teachers, and students tell me how much they liked the old system and wish it would go back. Teachers have a hard time following the ever-changing rotation schedule and parents feel that a longer time with one teacher encourages better learning.

How often do you see your students do this? I am very lucky to have big, beautiful windows that overlook the Colorado planes (and plains...we are on a landing path for DIA) since my school is on the very edge of city development. I wish they make the school in a mirror image so I could look at the mountains every day instead, but it is still a nice view. Whenever a student draws the "blue strip sky" I have them look outside and show how to the blue goes allll theee waaaaay dooooowwwn to the ground.
Usually, this is helpful for the student to understand, but today I was thrown for a loop. After giving a first grade girl my whole long talk about how to color skys she said, "But, why, Mr. Laughlin? The sky doesn't go all the way down, because you can't touch it." Love it; a science lesson ensued.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17032396672751951292noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5930763792721891473.post-19593245414476026902012-12-02T06:02:00.000-08:002012-12-06T11:18:33.996-08:00Are Art Teachers also Literacy Teachers?Warning: this post is a rant. A few days ago a colleague was speaking about how important it is for all teachers to encorage reading and writing in their classes. She said, "In our district, all teachers are Literacy teachers."

Interesting.

Please do not misunderstand me: I am fully aware (and support) of how important Literacy is, especially in our high ELL student population. But I think my job is so much more:

I have students who still cannot write letters (in seventh grade), refuse to pick up a
pencil for writing tasks, and crumple into despair when held accountable. These are the students at the highest risk
for drop out, but many still come back because of “non-core” classes, such as
art. I think we need to recognize that
the statement, “all teachers are Literacy teachers,” sounds wonderful, it is not
true. My job is to help students find
success when everywhere else they look is failure.
My job is to teach students how to engage and persist, stretch and
explore, reflect, envision, and express; not just in art, but in everything
they do. My job is to teach all the incredibly
important things every person should learn, but have been driven out of our
schools because they are difficult to assess. Students do read and write in my classroom, but not because I was told to do so by someone else to help support their Language A. If I help students in their language acquisition, that is wonderful, but
it is not my focus or drive. Please, do not force me justify my instruction though someone else's curriculum.

I think this point took me a long time to grasp. I so wanted beautiful works of art that can be hung in the school, but by what means? It is much more important that learning is happening in my classroom than students are creating a production line of cookie-cutter images. And, honestly, I feel the artwork coming out of my room is so much better! Sometimes the craftsmanship is not as high but the intent and exploration makes them extremely intriguing and relevant.
7. I Kill Creativity when I give Freedom without Focus

I think, and please correct me if I am wrong, that this is Bartel pushing back against TAB classrooms. Some people feel a choice art class is total chaos; students simply playing with materials having no focus or direction. To this I counter: my classroom is incredibly focused. Every student has a set path, a plan, a concept, and is relating their artwork to specific aspects of their visual culture. But, I allow my students to find their own focus. A large part of my instructional time is spent teaching students to understand what they are passionate about and how they can create artwork about their passions. I spend more time teaching this than anything else, including artistic techniques (develop craft). By not giving students specific focus, I make them more creative.
8. I Kill Creativity by Making Suggestions instead of asking Open Questions.

Some students really just want to be told what to do, even in my Choice Based classroom. The challenge for an art teacher is to find ways to let their students find their own solutions. Open questions makes the artist consider their artwork, and evaluate what specific solutions could be. Often when a student asks me for help on a project I will simply say, "I don't know, what do you think?" Or when they show me their artwork, looking for approval, I will say, "Looking good! Don't stop now!" or "That is a good start!" (even if they have been working on the artwork for months - evil laugh!) Although they usually get frustrated with my open ended responses, it forces them to evaluate their own artwork and determine what works for them.

This one feels like a double-edged sword to me. I love the idea of reading student's minds, although it is impossible. Once I try to anticipate what my student and wanting or thinking I am already wrong. I need to play off what they tell and show is important to them. Copy is a nasty word, and I do not encourage copying. Appropriation is a yummy word, and I will take appropriation any day of the week. For example, the picture on the right was done by a fourth grade student after looking at one of the posters in my classroom. We spoke about how he could change it to make it his own and, man, just look at the thing. I love it, and really does look completely different from the original.
I was reading Marvin Bartel's article Ten Classroom Creativity Killers (2001, revised 2012) today and it really got me thinking about how I encourage creativity in my classroom and what else can I do even better. You can read Mr. Bartel's full article HERE. Below I have added my own thoughts about his first five points. (more to come soon)

1. I Kill Creativity when I encourage Renting (borrowing) instead of Owning ideas.

I feel that is TAB to a T! Don't tell the artists what to make, but let them discover their own art on their own. When I assign projects I have already come up with an idea and loan that idea to my students. That really does not encourage intrinsic motivation or personal ownership.

2. I Kill Creativity when I Assign Grades without providing Informative Feedback.

Grades have been a major dilemma and focus of my professional practice lately and really deserve their own blog post. For the sake of brevity I will say this: I hate grades (meaning marks entered into a computer system for report cards) in art education. How can I honestly, non-subjectively, and quantifiably assess a student's artwork? I have changed my focus to one-on-one discussions and observations of artistic behaviors to create scores. Do these, or any, scores have an impact on student learning? Maybe it can be a tool for discouragement (but who wants that?). But, a simple "A" or "B" or "F" should be meaningless in the creative, free, safe, and adventitious atmosphere I attempt to create in my classroom. They all have it in them to be amazing, just in different ways. Who am I to say that one style of creative expression is more valid than the next?

3. I am Killing Creativity if I see a lot of Cliché Symbols instead of Original or Observed Representation of Experience. I am Killing Creativity even more if I criticize it.

I found it interesting that when students are in a choice classroom and do not know what to make (or are being lazy, or just want to play with the supplies) the same imagery appears over and over. They draw/paint big hearts, stickmen, and rainbows; and use clay to make dice and snowmen without a thought. Bartel sees this as a catch 22: you don't want to see it, but will crush their sweet little imaginations if you call them out on it. I am not so gentle. In my class I have the BORING LIST, a list of things students are not allowed to make in my class. It includes the top offenders, things not appropriate in school (weapons), and has space for additions as I see new cliches arrise (paper fingers). Sometimes I will have a student make an image using something from the boring list in a new innovative way (a ninja with a heart on his shirt comes to mind) and I publicly celebrate their pushing the rules. I explain that artists are born rule breakers, but they have to be able to speak about why they broke the rules, not just because they are there.

4. I Kill Creativity when I Demonstrate instead of having students Practice.

Don't you think that is hard? I have so many cool tricks I want to show my students. I am a reasonably good artist, and, most of the time, students enjoy watching me work. But there is SO much more learning happening if these techniques and tricks are discovered in the process of art making. I try to keep my demos to under five minutes every class. I love, love, love hearing an excited Kindergartener squeal "Mr. Laughlin!! I just made PINK!!!!" Rock and roll, little dude, you are On Fire With Art tm.

5. I Kill Creativity when I Show an Example instead of Defining a Problem.

I have not given this much thought before, but now I see how showing too many examples can really hamper exploration and learning. Showing examples can intimidate students, set expectations for outcomes, or limit possibilities. My student teacher asked me once about working on your own artwork while the students worked, and it reminded me of my high school art teacher. We always wanted to see her artwork, but she refused to let any of us see it. She said that she did not want students to think that if they made artwork like hers they would get a better grade. She wanted us to find our own style, our own voice. I do believe that visual culture and the art world has an enormous impact on artistic growth, but it is better found individually by the students than presented as "good" by the teacher to the whole class.

Stay tuned for numbers 6 - 10 next time!
